About Written Forward
Institutional work is strongest when experience, documentation, and implementation stay connected
Written Forward was created to help museums, cultural organizations, and nonprofits streamline operations, strengthen accountability, and improve the systems that hold institutional work together: plans, policies, responsibilities, records, decisions, knowledge, and the practical guidance people rely on every day.
POINT OF VIEW
Written Forward is built on a simple premise: institutional documents should describe and support the way an organization actually works. A policy that no one follows, a plan without ownership, or a procedure that depends entirely on one person’s memory may exist on paper without functioning as an institutional system.
The goal is not documentation for its own sake. It is to improve operations and create clarity around responsibility, decision-making, continuity, implementation, standards, and review so the institution can act consistently and responsibly over time.
An Approach Grounded in Practice
The perspective behind Written Forward comes from working inside institutions, not simply advising them from the outside. Recommendations have to work within real organizations—with limited time, competing priorities, existing cultures, and people responsible for carrying the work forward.
Each engagement begins with how the organization actually operates. Assessment, analysis, planning, and documentation are then used to streamline work, clarify priorities, address gaps in applicable expectations, strengthen responsibility, preserve knowledge, and create systems that remain useful beyond a single person or moment.
Professional Boundaries
Written Forward provides institutional assessment, planning, documentation, and implementation support. Engagements may identify issues that require legal, human resources, accounting, regulatory, engineering, cybersecurity, or other specialized expertise. When that occurs, the appropriate qualified professional should review or address those matters.
